The Family Digital Agreement

Fill it in together at the kitchen table. Print it, sign it, stick it on the fridge. The most-protected children are not the ones with the strictest rules. They are the ones who helped write them.

Use your browser's print dialog to save it as a PDF or send to a printer.

Notes

Before any new app is downloaded, we agree to

e.g. "have a 2-minute conversation about it together"

5

The conversations we will have

A short, regular check-in keeps small things small. Pick a time you will both honour.

Our weekly check-in is

Day and time, e.g. Sunday after dinner

If something online upsets or worries you, you can come to me at any time. I will

e.g. "listen first, not punish you for being honest, and help you decide what to do next"

6

What I (the parent) am agreeing to

  • Model the rules I am asking you to follow (no phone at the dinner table includes me)
  • Not snoop without telling you, unless I have a serious safety concern
  • Stay calm if something goes wrong, because that is what gets us through it together
  • Re-read this with you every 3 months and update what is no longer working
7

What we agree happens if the agreement is broken

Pick consequences that pause, not punish. Write them in your own words so they fit your family.

If a rule is broken once, we will

If it keeps happening, we will

What we will not do (e.g. confiscate without conversation)
